Tarkemmat kurssikuvaukset kohdassa Säätiön kurssit.

Vuosina 2022–2024 emme myönnä apurahoja kuvien digitointiprojekteihin, vaan tuemme JOKAn, Journalistisen kuva-arkiston, digitointiprojekteja. Lisätietoja asiasta antaa säätiön asiamies.

Seuraavissa hakuohjeissa kerrotaan hakemuksen tekemisestä säätiön sähköisessä hakupalvelussa. Hakemuksen sisältöön liittyvissä asioissa voit kysyä neuvoa säätiön asiamieheltä Paula Arvakselta, puh. +358 44 586 6144, paula.arvas@patriciaseppalansaatio.fi. Teknisissä ongelmatilanteissa neuvoja antaa hakupalvelun tekninen tuki, jonka yhteystiedot löydät hakulomakkeesta. Lue nämä hakuohjeet, ennen kuin siirryt täyttämään hakulomaketta.

Hakuaika

Patricia Seppälän säätiön apurahojen hakuaika on tammikuu. Vuonna 2024 sähköinen hakulomake on auki 2.-31.1.

Sähköisessä hakupalvelussa on kirjautumisohjeet.

Dokumenttiprojektit

Apuraha on tarkoitettu työskentelykulujen kattamiseen.

Apurahan saajan raportointivelvollisuus

Jokainen myönteisen apurahapäätöksen saaja on velvoitettu raportoimaan apurahan käytöstä seuraavan vuoden tammikuun loppuun mennessä.

Tales of Loneliness
Photographer Heidi Piironen’s workshop for photojournalists

The media often reports various facts on loneliness in Finland, for example “…every third person experiences feelings of loneliness in Finland…” or “…prolonged loneliness has a deteriorating effect on health…” Both the young and the elderly suffer from loneliness, but (surprisingly) also adults in intimate relationships. Being lonely and excluded from social interaction is, at its worst, devastating, with a profound influence on an individual’s life. How, then, to document this, often invisible phenomenon? How to make tales of loneliness visible?

Photojournalist: If you have been pondering on these topics in your personal and professional life, apply for Heidi Piironen’s workshop, for the most part carried out during the year 2024. It consists of five meetings: two in the spring, one in September, one in November and one in January 2025. The meetings are for eight participants, and they will take place in Helsinki city center on Fridays from 9 am to 4 pm (22.3., 19.4., 17.5., 23.8. and 1.11.).

You apply for this course by ticking Tales of Loneliness workshop on the electronic application form. N.B. Do not include the amount of your (grant) application when applying for this course. In case there are many applicants from outside the Helsinki region, the foundation will consider compensating for reasonable travel and accommodation costs up to 300 € in accordance with provided receipts (documentation). For more information, please contact the foundation’s executive officer.

Heidi Piironen has been active in the field of photojournalism in versatile ways for twenty years. She has generated ideas and produced reports both in Finland and abroad. She worked as a photographic reporter for Helsingin Sanomat, a major Finnish news medium, from 2006 to 2022. She graduated from Turku Arts Academy in 2002 and studied photojournalism in Lahti Institute of Design from 2002 to 2004. Together with the author Kimmo Oksanen she received a state award for information publication (from the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland) in 2019. Furthermore, she received the Patricia Seppälä foundation photojournalistic award in 2020.

Processing Applications and grant decisions

The grant applications are handled and assessed in February and March. The names of the grant recipients will be published on the foundation’s website by the end of April 2023 at the latest. The application process is confidential. Decisions are reached through good foundation practice. No justifications shall be available for individual grant decisions, which is a standard practice in all foundations.

Every year the foundation receives more good applications than it has grants to award. This means that no well-composed application can automatically result in a grant.

Reporting Obligation of Grant Recipients

Each grant recipient is obliged to submit a report on how the grant has been used by the end of January next year. The report has to be in such a form that it can freely be used in the foundation’s communication. The foundation also expresses the wish that images produced with its funding could also be used in the foundation’s communication. The foundation will be publishing posts regarding the projects of the grant recipients on the foundation’s website as well as on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Why a final report, and what kind?

Without a final report on how a grant has been used the foundation cannot award a new grant. The report has further significance in that it provides information to the person assessing new grant applications. The person in question does not necessarily have knowledge of past applications nor projects. For these reasons it is paramount that the final report be clear and concise.

In your report, please include the name of the grant you received in the past, as well as information on how you used the money, and the end results. In case your project is still ongoing, lay out your plans on how to proceed. Also, include 3–5 photo samples to the report.
